This is a small, spirited, active and observant breed. They have a beautiful, bright coat, and a warm face. They are famously happy, and make grand companion dogs for older people. But they are also outgoing and adventurous family dogs, and are a fantastic breed for young kids too. They love to be at the centre of activity, are very playful, but can get easily bored.
A smart breed, the JRT is usually easier to train than most terriers, but the key is to make training as fun as possible, so they enjoy learning. They have high energy needs, requiring at least 1 hour of walking a day and plenty of play, to keep them happy and healthy. Grooming needs are minimal. A typical lifespan is 13-16 years.
